Governor calls for faster pace on Makurdi–Enugu and Onitsha–Enugu expressways

Governor Peter Mbah has appealed for greater federal attention to Enugu State, stressing its historical importance and its role in Nigeria’s economic future.

Mbah made the call at the weekend while hosting members of the Joint National Assembly Committee on Works, who were in the state to inspect ongoing federal road projects. The delegation, led by Hon. Akin Alabi, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, praised Mbah’s administration for supporting contractors and creating a safe working environment.

Alabi noted that contractors consistently spoke highly of the governor’s cooperation.

“Security-wise, they feel very safe, very much at home. We know if a governor wants to frustrate a federal project, he can. But you have made these projects go smoothly,” he said.

Governor Mbah, however, urged the lawmakers to ensure that critical projects such as the Makurdi–Enugu Expressway and Onitsha–Enugu Express Road are accelerated, describing their current pace as too slow.

“We cannot talk about growing our economy from $4.4bn to $30bn without road infrastructure. Roads connect the market, industry and people, providing the means to live with comfort and dignity,” Mbah said.

The governor reiterated his commitment to paving every road in Enugu, adding that his administration is always willing to resolve disputes over rights of way and compensation to prevent delays.

The meeting also had in attendance Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, and Hon. Dennis Agbo, member representing Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency.
