Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the appointment of Professor Eunice Eboserehimen Omonzejie as the new Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, who confirmed that Omonzejie was selected from a shortlist of three candidates recommended by the university’s governing council.
Professor Omonzejie, a renowned scholar of French and Francophone African literatures, has been a long-serving academic in AAU’s Department of Modern Languages. Her work spans African and Francophone literary studies, gender studies, and cultural studies, where she has made significant contributions as both a researcher and editor.
She has authored and co-edited several influential publications, including Women Novelists in Francophone Black Africa: Views, Reviews and Interviews, French Language in Nigeria: Essays in Honour of UFTAN Pacesetters, and Language Matters in Contemporary West Africa.
Beyond scholarship, Omonzejie has been a strong advocate for women in academia. She previously served as President of the AAU chapter of the National Association of Women Academics (NAWACS), championing mentorship, research, and gender equality.
The Edo State Government described her appointment as a recognition of “academic excellence, administrative experience, and commitment to the growth and development of Ambrose Alli University.”
It urged her to bring her wealth of experience to bear in strengthening AAU’s mission of producing world-class graduates and advancing research and innovation.
Her appointment marks a significant milestone for the institution, making her one of the few women to hold the position of Vice Chancellor in Nigeria’s public universities.
