Police launch search operation as fear grips Ojije community after late-night church attack

Panic has swept through Ojije community in Utonkon, Ado Local Government Area of Benue State after suspected gunmen stormed a Catholic church during a night vigil and abducted nine worshippers.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred at St. John’s Catholic Church while congregants were engaged in overnight prayers.

Police spokesperson, DSP Edet Udeme, said the armed attackers invaded the church and forcibly took the victims to an unknown location, leaving the community in shock.

Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police ordered the immediate deployment of tactical and operational units to the area to intensify search-and-rescue efforts.

“Security has been reinforced in vulnerable areas to forestall further attacks and ensure the safety of citizens,” Udeme told journalists on Monday.

She assured residents that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property, adding that efforts are ongoing to rescue the abducted worshippers and track down those responsible.

The incident has heightened tension across parts of Benue, a state that has repeatedly witnessed attacks linked to armed groups targeting rural communities and places of worship.

Authorities say coordinated operations are underway as families of the victims and residents await news of their safe return.
