Gunmen Attack IGP’s Special Squad in Imo Ahead of Tinubu’s Visit

Gunmen have launched a deadly attack on officers of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Interventions Squad in Okigwe, Imo State, leaving one officer dead and several others wounded.

According to a police wireless message cited in reports, the assault occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday at MRS Fuel Station, Abor Umulolo, Okigwe. The attackers, suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), reportedly opened fire on the officers.

Three policemen sustained injuries during the shootout and were rushed to hospital. Inspector Umaru Mohammed was later confirmed dead.

The attack comes just days before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Imo State on Tuesday, where he is expected to commission several projects completed by Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration.

Efforts to reach the Imo State Police Command for official confirmation were unsuccessful. Spokesperson Henry Okoye did not respond to calls or messages as of press time.

The incident is the latest in a series of violent clashes in the South East, raising concerns about security arrangements ahead of the president’s high-profile visit.
