A convoy belonging to former Anambra State governor, Dr Chris Ngige, has come under heavy gunfire on the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North, leaving a woman dead and several people injured. Ngige was not travelling with the team when the attack occurred.
Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, Ngige’s former media aide, said the attackers—reportedly dressed in police and military uniforms—opened fire on the pilot vehicle. A police officer in the car was shot, and the assailants seized his weapon and uniform before fleeing.
A woman who attempted to record the assault on her phone was killed at the scene. A shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening was also hit by bullets. He lost significant blood and is scheduled for surgery, though doctors say he is stable and expected to recover fully.
The pilot car was left riddled with bullet holes. Police officials confirmed that no officer died in the incident. The escort leader who sustained gunshot wounds has undergone surgery and is also expected to make a full recovery. The injured shopkeeper was fortunate, medical sources said, as none of the bullets struck his spine.
Chukwuelobe said he had spoken with Dr Ngige, who confirmed the attack and expressed deep concern for the victims. The former governor also conveyed condolences to the family of the woman killed while filming the ordeal.
The Anambra State Police Command has yet to issue a formal response.
