Gunmen Kill Mother, Daughter in Akure Night Attack as Kidnap Attempt Turns Deadly

Fear has gripped residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital, after gunmen launched a late-night attack on Igushin community along the Ala axis, killing a mother and her daughter during a failed abduction attempt.

The assailants, suspected to be kidnappers, reportedly stormed the area on Thursday night, firing gunshots to create panic as they attempted to abduct residents. In the chaos, the two victims were shot dead inside their home.

The deceased woman, believed to be a poultry farmer in the community, was killed alongside her daughter, leaving neighbours in shock. Initial confusion surrounded their fate, with some residents assuming they had been kidnapped before the grim discovery was made.

A local source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers were heavily armed and operated in a group of about five. “We heard gunshots suddenly and everyone ran for safety. At first, we thought they had taken the woman and her daughter, but later we found out they had been shot,” the source said.

The incident adds to a growing pattern of violent attacks across parts of Ondo State, where communities have faced repeated cases of killings and abductions in recent months. Residents have staged protests in the past, calling on authorities to strengthen security and protect lives.

Confirming the attack, the Ondo State Police Command condemned the killings and assured that efforts were underway to track down those responsible. Police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh disclosed that two other victims were rescued during a swift response operation.

“The command strongly condemns this violent act which resulted in the tragic loss of two innocent lives. Investigations have commenced, and we are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice,” Jimoh said. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely information.

The latest attack has renewed concerns over safety in the state, as communities continue to demand stronger measures to curb the rising threat of armed violence and kidnapping.
