Fear gripped Zaki-Biam, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State on Monday after gunmen stormed the town’s main market and shot dead a repentant bandit.
The victim, identified as Kyoga Joka, had recently renounced banditry and was serving with the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) in Ukum before the attack.
Eyewitnesses said the armed men arrived the bustling market unexpectedly and opened fire on Joka at close range, killing him instantly. The sound of gunfire triggered chaos, with traders and shoppers fleeing in all directions.
Authorities have yet to comment on the incident, and it remains unclear whether the attack was linked to Joka’s past activities or his new role with the JTF. Security operatives are expected to tighten surveillance in the area as investigations continue.
