Panic swept through Uso community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State after gunmen invaded a branch of the Celestial Church of Christ and abducted six worshippers during a midnight service.
The attack occurred at about 12:50am on Wednesday, according to the Ondo State Police Command.
Police spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the assailants took the victims to an undisclosed location.
Jimoh said officers moved swiftly after receiving reports of the abduction.
“Upon receiving the report, operatives of the Command, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, immediately mobilised to the scene and commenced coordinated rescue operations,” the statement read.
Authorities confirmed that one of the kidnapped worshippers has since been rescued through what they described as sustained joint efforts. Security operations are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims.
The church abduction comes amid heightened security challenges in parts of Ondo State.
Only days earlier, gunmen reportedly kidnapped a couple in Ilu-Abo, Akure North Local Government Area. The state has also been reeling from the killing of Oba Kehinde Falodun, the traditional ruler of Agamo in Akure North LGA, who was shot dead after attackers stormed his palace.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about the safety of residents and places of worship, particularly during late-night gatherings.
Authorities say security patrols have been intensified across affected areas as efforts continue to track down the perpetrators.
