A late-night fire has killed five members of the same family in Katsina State, leaving residents of Kofar Sauri district in shock.

The blaze swept through the family’s home shortly after midnight on Monday, destroying the building before neighbours could intervene. The victims — a couple and their three children — were trapped inside as the fire spread rapidly.

Witnesses said they noticed the flames only after the house had already been engulfed, leaving no chance of rescue. All belongings inside the property were lost.

Emergency officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire, but residents fear a sudden electricity surge may have triggered the incident. The community has reported frequent high-voltage spikes whenever power is restored.

“There was an unusual electricity surge when the light came back,” one resident said. “That’s likely what caused the fire.”

Authorities are expected to open an investigation as the community mourns the devastating loss.
