A young hairdresser, Odama Mary Agado, has died by suicide after allegedly discovering her boyfriend with another woman in the apartment she rented for him in Enugu State.
The 22-year-old, who hailed from Woleche-Ipuole in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, was said to have ingested a poisonous substance believed to be Sniper after the heartbreaking incident.
According to local sources, Mary had been in a committed relationship and had financially supported her boyfriend by buying him a car and renting his apartment. However, when she visited him last Friday, she reportedly found him with another woman, sparking a heated confrontation.
A family acquaintance, identified as Daniel, told reporters that Mary left the scene visibly distraught and returned home to call her mother. During the emotional call, she allegedly warned her mother to “take whatever she heard in good faith,” suggesting she planned to end her life.
Tragically, her mother did not immediately react to the call. “She said she had no airtime to call Mary back or alert anyone. Hours later, she received a call that her daughter had drunk Sniper and was rushed to the hospital,” Daniel recounted.
Doctors battled to save her life, but she was pronounced dead later that evening. Her remains were transported to her hometown the next day for burial.
Daniel said the community decided to bury her immediately upon arrival. “We couldn’t keep her body for the usual funeral rites because she was too young. Everyone is still in shock. Some believe she was spiritually manipulated, but nothing can bring her back,” he lamented.
The incident has sparked renewed discussions around mental health awareness, emotional abuse, and the dangers of impulsive decisions fueled by heartbreak.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether any formal investigation will follow, as the case is currently believed to be a voluntary act of suicide.
