‘I Entered Politics to Save Lives’ — Ex-DSS Chief Lawal Daura Vows to Tackle Katsina Insecurity

Former intelligence boss says security is the master key to fixing Katsina’s economy, markets and farming

Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, has said his decision to venture into politics is driven by a desire to rescue Katsina State from worsening insecurity and the daily loss of lives.

Daura spoke on Thursday in Katsina during a reunion organised by the Government College Funtua Old Boys Association (FOBA), Class of 1969, where he addressed supporters and former classmates on his political ambition.

Describing himself as a “political mechanic,” the former intelligence chief said the phrase captured the depth of the security crisis confronting the state.

“Whenever you see a mechanic with his instruments, you know there is a problem. Truly, there is a problem in our dear state, and it is affecting all of us,” Daura said.

He argued that insecurity sits at the centre of Katsina’s broader challenges, warning that development efforts would remain futile without first restoring safety.

“People talk about security all the time because it is the key that opens the door to solving other problems. If you don’t get that key, you cannot address anything else,” he added.

Daura recalled how parts of Katsina once enjoyed thriving night markets, a reality he said has been erased by fear and violence.

He also noted that farming, the backbone of Katsina’s economy and that of neighbouring states, has been severely disrupted as farmers abandon fields due to insecurity.

Rejecting suggestions that ambition or personal gain motivated his political move, Daura said he had already surpassed such pursuits.

“This is not about leadership position. The office I once held was bigger than that of a governor. I have made a name beyond this country. If it was about money, what would I do with money now?” he asked.

According to him, the persistent loss of lives, reports of human rights abuses, and the everyday suffering of ordinary citizens ultimately pushed him into the political arena.

“You hear these things like tales, but they are real — abuse of human rights in homes, on the roads, and everywhere. These are the things that attracted me to politics,” he said.

Expressing appreciation to his former schoolmates, Daura said their early support strengthened his resolve.

“We are not going to tell stories. With the help of Allah, we will do our best and succeed,” he assured.

Also speaking at the event, FOBA Chairman, Alhaji Dr Aliyu Yahaya, said Daura’s background in intelligence and national security gives him a clear edge in addressing Katsina’s security challenges if elected.

Yahaya pledged that members of the association would mobilise widespread support for Daura, promising that each member would deliver hundreds of votes should he secure the governorship ticket of any political party.
