IBB University mourns 300-level student after alleged gambling loss triggers tragedy in Niger State

The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, has been thrown into mourning following the death of a 300-level Computer Science student, Kelvin Danlami, in a deeply distressing incident that has reignited concerns about gambling among undergraduates.

The student reportedly died on Monday, 19 January 2026, after allegedly mismanaging ₦150,000 given to him for house rent, with claims that the money was lost to gambling. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under discussion within the university community.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) described the loss as devastating and extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends and colleagues.

Signed by the SUG General Secretary, Comrade Aliyu Abubakar, the statement said Kelvin’s death was “a tragic and irreplaceable loss” to his family, the Department of Computer Science and the wider IBB University community.

“On behalf of the entire student community of IBB University, Lapai, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends and colleagues over this painful loss,” the statement read.

The student union also offered prayers for comfort and strength for those affected, urging students to support one another during the period of grief.

Campus concerns over gambling and student welfare

The incident has sparked renewed conversations on campus about the growing influence of gambling on students and the pressure many face in managing finances.

Student leaders and observers say the tragedy underscores the need for stronger awareness campaigns, counselling services and support systems to help students cope with financial stress and addiction-related challenges.

University authorities have not yet issued an official statement, but students say the loss has left many shaken and reflective about the importance of seeking help in moments of distress.
