Imo Assembly Names Hope Uzodimma Nigeria’s Most Education-Friendly Governor

— Lawmakers hail creation of Imo State University of Science, Innovation and Technology, Omuma

Governor Hope Uzodimma has been named Nigeria’s “Most Education-Friendly Governor” by the Imo State House of Assembly following his administration’s sweeping reforms in the education sector.

The commendation came after a motion moved by Rt. Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri, member representing Oru East Constituency, during plenary on Thursday, November 6, 2025. Lawmakers unanimously backed the motion, describing Uzodimma as “an academic reformer” who has transformed the state’s educational landscape.

Nwaneri, in his motion, highlighted several milestones under Uzodimma’s leadership — including the restoration of full accreditation and graduation of medical doctors at Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH), Orlu; the upgrade of Alvan Ikoku College of Education to a full-fledged university; and the elevation of Imo Polytechnic, Umuagwo.

“Before he came on board, graduating medical doctors at IMSUTH was a dream deferred. Today, hundreds have graduated thanks to his interventions,” Nwaneri said.

He further praised initiatives such as the ICT Hub and SkillUp Imo Programme, noting that these projects have strengthened the employability and digital readiness of Imo youths.

The House also applauded the governor for establishing the Imo State University of Science, Innovation and Technology, Omuma — recently approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Lawmakers described the institution as a game-changer that would “position Imo as a global hub for research, training, and technological advancement.”

According to Nwaneri, “The new university will expand access to higher education, foster innovation, and strengthen Imo’s role in Nigeria’s scientific development.”

In a resolution adopted by the entire House and presided over by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, members congratulated Governor Uzodimma for his “visionary leadership and commitment to educational excellence,” officially declaring him the Most Education-Friendly Governor in Nigeria.
