The Imo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to collaborate with the Federal Government to evaluate and potentially explore crude oil and natural gas reserves in Ikeduru Local Government Area.
The motion, brought forward during the Assembly’s November 11, 2025 sitting by Hon. Johnleoba Iheoha, highlighted Ikeduru’s untapped potential in contributing to the state’s economic growth. The lawmaker noted that credible geological surveys and local findings indicate substantial deposits of crude oil and natural gas capable of driving industrialization, job creation, and infrastructural development.
“The oil and gas deposits are now in commercial quantity and the State can tap from it till the next 200 years. That is why I brought this motion to the Chambers for onward action from the Government,” Iheoha said, recalling that Shell began drilling in Iho Dimeze, Ikeduru, in 1950, with wells still existing today.
Members of the Assembly unanimously supported the motion, describing it as a key strategy for diversifying Imo’s economy and maximizing the state’s natural resources. Iheoha also pledged to attract foreign investors once the government initiates actionable steps toward exploration.
