Governor Hope Uzodinma has announced that Imo State residents will begin to enjoy uninterrupted 24-hour power supply starting in November, marking a major step toward transforming the state’s energy landscape.

Speaking during a stakeholders and expanded Executive Council meeting held at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre (EIICC), Owerri, the governor said the project will commence with a test phase in Owerri metropolis before expanding to Orlu, Okigwe, and Mbaise zones.

Uzodinma revealed that the initiative will be powered by the Urashi Power Plant Project — a state-backed scheme supported by enabling legislation designed to ensure consistent electricity delivery across Imo.

As part of his administration’s broader economic relief measures, the governor also announced that residents earning below ₦150,000 monthly will be exempted from paying personal income tax, with oil companies operating in the state expected to cover the cost of implementing the policy.

He further disclosed plans to provide free transportation for retirees and students on key routes including Owerri–Okigwe, Owerri–Orlu, Owerri–Aba, Owerri–Onitsha, and Owerri–Port Harcourt, using newly procured Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered metro buses.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to peace and security, Uzodinma said stability remained crucial to achieving sustained development. He added that contractors handling key road and infrastructure projects had already received 50 per cent of their payments, ensuring steady progress across the state.

Uzodinma also clarified that his government was not seeking federal reimbursements for the reconstruction of federal roads within Imo, saying his focus was on immediate benefits for residents rather than political credit.

Emphasising youth inclusion, he called for a “new generation of politicians” to take part in shaping the future of Imo State.
