Civil servants in Imo State have begun receiving the new ₦104,000 minimum wage, officially making the state the highest-paying in Nigeria.

The implementation follows Governor Hope Uzodimma’s earlier approval of a revised salary structure aimed at improving workers’ welfare and stimulating the local economy.

Many government employees confirmed receiving payment alerts reflecting the increased wage, sparking jubilation and praise for the governor’s fulfilment of his promise.

Under the new wage policy, fresh government workers now earn ₦104,000 monthly, medical doctors receive ₦513,000, while entry-level lecturers in state-owned tertiary institutions take home ₦220,000.

With the rollout, Imo overtakes other states, including Lagos, which pays ₦88,000; Rivers with ₦85,000; and Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa, each paying ₦80,000.

In a statement on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, Prince Eze Ugochukwu, described the policy as a “bold step toward reshaping the state’s economic and social landscape.”

“Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration is spearheading this considerable policy change, which is poised to have a substantial impact on the state’s economy and workers’ well-being,” he stated.

The wage increase, which comes amid rising living costs nationwide, positions Imo as a model for labour-friendly governance and fiscal commitment to workers’ prosperity.
