Amupitan highlights critical link between national security and credible elections during visit from security experts.
Joash O. Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has emphasised that national security and stability are vital for credible elections in Nigeria, particularly as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Receiving a delegation from the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies (AANISS) at INEC headquarters in Abuja, Amupitan described the visit as timely, noting that the integrity of elections is directly linked to national stability.
“Credible elections remain a top priority as Nigeria continues to deepen its democratic process,” he said, praising AANISS for building the capacity of senior security officers and strengthening the nation’s security architecture.
Mike Ejiofor, President of AANISS, explained that the visit aims to enhance coordination between INEC and Nigeria’s security institutions ahead of the 2027 polls. The association brings together strategic-level security professionals, including senior officers from the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, and regulatory bodies, whose expertise is essential for electoral stability.
“With the enormous expectations placed on INEC as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections, it is important that the Commission is represented in the course to strengthen strategic coordination on electoral security,” Ejiofor said.
He also congratulated Amupitan on his appointment, noting the immense responsibility of overseeing elections for a nation of over 200 million people.
The INEC chairman reassured the delegation that the commission is committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, employing innovative strategies and maintaining strong collaboration with security agencies and stakeholders across the country.
Analysts note that as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, strategic partnerships between electoral bodies and security institutions are expected to be crucial in preventing violence, ensuring voter safety, and upholding the credibility of the democratic process.
