INEC Confirms 2027 Election Timetable, Awaits Electoral Act Amendment

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finalised its timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, affirming its readiness despite pending amendments to the Electoral Act.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the development on Wednesday in Abuja during an engagement with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs). He said the commission has submitted its recommendations to the National Assembly but noted that the timing of the legislation could influence certain aspects of the electoral calendar.

“Some activities outlined in the timetable may require adjustments depending on when the National Assembly concludes work on the amended law,” Amupitan said. “However, we remain fully committed to delivering a credible election.”

Until the amended Electoral Act is enacted, INEC will continue to operate under the current legal framework, ensuring that all preparatory activities align with existing provisions. The commission’s proactive approach is aimed at maintaining public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 elections.
