Inter and AC Milan Complete €197m Purchase of San Siro, Set to Build New €1.2bn Stadium

Inter Milan and AC Milan have officially completed the €197 million (£168m) purchase of the legendary San Siro Stadium, paving the way for its eventual demolition and the construction of a new state-of-the-art arena.

The two Serie A giants announced on Wednesday that they had signed the final deed of sale with the Municipality of Milan, finalising a deal that had been under negotiation for months. The acquisition followed city approval in late September after an 11-hour debate and a narrow vote at Milan City Hall.

Nicknamed La Scala del Calcio (“Football’s La Scala”), the San Siro has been home to both clubs for nearly a century and is regarded as one of world football’s most iconic venues. Between them, Inter and Milan have lifted the European Cup or Champions League ten times within its walls.

Under the new redevelopment plan — estimated at around €1.2 billion — a modern 71,500-capacity stadium will be constructed on land immediately west of the existing ground, currently used for parking and a public park. The current San Siro will continue hosting matches until the new venue is completed, after which it will be almost entirely demolished to make room for parkland, offices, and entertainment spaces.

World-renowned architectural firms Foster + Partners and MANICA have been commissioned to design the new facility, which the clubs hope will be ready ahead of Euro 2032 — co-hosted by Italy and Turkey.

Italy’s football federation must submit its list of five stadiums for the tournament to UEFA by October 2026, with any new venues required to begin construction by March 2027.

Before its demolition, the San Siro will play host to one final major global event — the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics on February 6, 2026.
