Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has expressed deep disappointment over reports linking Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen with a shock £50 million move to Turkish giants Galatasaray, calling the potential transfer a huge miss for the Red Devils. Speaking during a segment on talkSPORT with tennis star Nick Kyrgios on Monday, Ferdinand stressed that Osimhen should be leading the line at Old Trafford, not in Istanbul.
The former England defender didn’t hide his frustration, especially as United have already missed out on top target Viktor Gyokeres, who is reportedly on his way to Arsenal. “If Osimhen moves to Galatasaray for £50 million, that’s peanuts in this market. It’ll be a massive letdown,” he said. “Man United are desperate for a clinical number 9, and Osimhen is exactly that. He scores goals at the highest level.”
Victor Osimhen, who scored 26 goals in 32 Serie A appearances in the 2022/2023 season and helped Napoli win their first Scudetto in over 30 years, has become one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe. His potential move to Galatasaray comes amid United’s financial constraints and lack of urgency in the transfer window.
Ferdinand’s remarks come at a time when United fans are clamoring for a new striker following the underwhelming performance of the team’s current forward line last season. With Rasmus Højlund still developing and Anthony Martial injured for most of the campaign, the need for a proven goal machine has never been more pressing.
Sources close to the Osimhen camp reveal the Nigerian star is open to a new challenge, especially after tensions with Napoli’s management last season. Although Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Arsenal, had previously shown interest, no concrete offer has been made—leaving Galatasaray’s £50 million bid the only serious move so far.
Ferdinand didn’t mince words when asked what United must do next. “This club needs to show ambition. If Osimhen ends up in Turkey while United fumble another window, questions must be asked. I’d be buzzing if we landed him, but if not, it’s another missed opportunity,” he warned.
The window remains open until September 2, 2025, and all eyes are now on United’s board to act decisively—or risk losing a world-class finisher to a club many feel lacks the competitive stature Osimhen deserves.
