A major fire outbreak has destroyed parts of three residential buildings and an electricity transformer site in Kano, raising fresh concerns over electrical safety in densely populated areas.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in the Gaida area near Fatima Bread, within Kumbotso Local Government Area, after emergency responders received a distress call at about 11:05 a.m.

According to the Kano State Fire Service, firefighters were swiftly deployed from its headquarters alongside teams from Sharada and Rijiyar Zaki stations to contain the blaze.

“Upon arrival, our personnel found an open space measuring about 50 by 50 feet, used as an electrical transformer site, completely engulfed in flames,” the agency said in a statement.

The fire rapidly spread from the transformer site to nearby residential structures, leaving a trail of destruction. Witnesses described scenes of intense flames tearing through parts of the buildings before firefighters brought the situation under control.

Officials confirmed that one of the affected buildings, a small residential structure, was severely damaged, while a one-storey building suffered significant destruction, particularly on its upper floor. A third residential property was also impacted by the fire.

Preliminary investigations point to an electrical spark as the likely cause of the outbreak.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged residents to adopt stricter safety measures. “We advise members of the public to take all necessary precautions to prevent fire outbreaks, especially by avoiding unsafe electrical practices and ensuring proper handling of appliances,” he said.

No casualties have been reported so far, although authorities say assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage.

The fire service reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, while calling on residents to remain vigilant and report emergencies promptly.
