Kebbi Lawmaker Urges Federal Government to Boost Rural Security Amid Rising Banditry

A member of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Mohammed, representing Birnin Kebbi/Kalgo/Bunza Federal Constituency, has urged the Federal Government to urgently improve security infrastructure in rural communities battling escalating cases of banditry, cattle rustling, and kidnappings.

Raising a motion of urgent public importance on the floor of the House on Tuesday, Mohammed expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Kebbi State and other parts of the North-West, warning that unchecked criminal activities were crippling agriculture, education, and rural livelihoods.

“Farmers are being forced to flee their farms, schools have been closed down, and families displaced,” he lamented, noting that many villages have been deserted due to persistent attacks.

The lawmaker warned that continued insecurity in rural areas poses a serious threat to food production and national stability, especially as bandits target farming communities during harvest season.

Citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that the security and welfare of citizens shall be the primary purpose of government, Mohammed called on the Federal Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Police Force to take decisive action to restore peace and confidence in rural areas.

He emphasized that securing rural communities is not only vital for the safety of residents but also key to reviving Nigeria’s food supply chain and preventing an impending agricultural crisis.
