The Anglican community in Kaduna has been thrown into mourning after confirming the death of Venerable Edwin Achi, who was abducted alongside his wife and daughter last month.
Achi, who headed Ebenezer Anglican Church in Ungwan Maijero, was seized on 28 October when armed men stormed his residence in Nissi, Chikun Local Government Area. The family had only recently moved into the community before the attack.
The abductors later demanded a ransom of ₦600 million, according to relatives briefed on the negotiations.
Originally from Umuaja in Delta State’s Ukwuani Local Government Area, Achi served the church for years before his abduction. His death was confirmed in a statement issued by the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion.
“With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, announces the passing unto glory of The Venerable Edwin Achi,” the statement read. “Ven. Edwin Achi, who was kidnapped alongside his wife on 28th October, 2025, has been confirmed dead.”
The Diocese described the loss as devastating, noting that many across the state and beyond had been touched by his ministry and service.
Despite his death, his wife and daughter remain in captivity, with the kidnappers reportedly refusing to reconsider their ransom demand.
Nigeria continues to grapple with a worsening wave of violent attacks and mass abductions, particularly in the North. International concern has grown, with the United States recently characterising the persistent targeting of Christians as bearing the hallmarks of genocide.
