Kwara Bandit Attack: 78 Killed in Woro Village, Village Head’s Children Among Victims

A brutal bandit attack in Woro community, Kaiama Local Government, Kwara State, left 78 people dead and at least 35 others abducted, including the village head’s wife and remaining children, security sources confirmed.

The assailants, suspected religious extremists, stormed the village around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, opening fire on residents while setting homes and shops ablaze. Among the deceased were two children of the village head, one of whom had recently graduated from a School of Nursing in 2025.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers demanded the keys to the traditional ruler’s vehicles, destroyed some, and used the remaining one to abduct the village head’s family. Before leaving, they burned additional properties, leaving Woro “a shadow of its former self,” sources said.

Mass Burial and Mourning
Funeral prayers (janazah) were held around 6:30 p.m., shortly before Maghrib prayers, and the victims were buried in batches of 10, 15, and 20, according to Saidu Baba Ahmed, lawmaker for the Gwanabe/Gwaria constituency. The deceased included 75 males and three females.

Security Response
A joint team of police, military, and National Forest Guards has been deployed to the area to prevent further attacks and restore order. Investigations are ongoing to track down the perpetrators.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahaman AbdulRasaq, alongside top security officials, visited the community to assess the situation and commiserate with the Emir of Kaiama, Muazu Shehu Omar, and affected families. Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo condoled with residents, urging cooperation with security agencies and vigilance.
