The Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has voiced frustration over the state government’s failure to pay outstanding Teachers Specific Allowances (TSA), despite repeated appeals.
In a statement signed by the union’s chairman, Comrade Yusuf Wahab Agboola, and Deputy Secretary-General, Mike Modesty, the NUT accused the government of maintaining “a graveyard silence” on the issue.
The allowances in contention include the 27.5% and 21% TSA owed to teachers across the state. According to the union, several engagements with authorities have failed to produce results.
Following a meeting with key stakeholders in Ilorin on Tuesday, the NUT leadership announced that teachers would hold a day of fasting and prayer before taking any formal industrial action. The move, they said, is aimed at seeking divine intervention before issuing an ultimatum.
While acknowledging the government’s approval of financial support for the 2024 Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) promotion exercise, the union stressed that welfare and allowances must remain top priorities to sustain teachers’ morale and productivity.
The NUT called on its members to remain calm and await further directives from the leadership, warning that patience among teachers was wearing thin.
