The Labour Party (LP) has confirmed that no aspirant, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, will receive an automatic ticket for the 2027 general elections. All party positions, from the presidency to governorships and other elective offices, will be filled through formally conducted primaries.
Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, reiterated the party’s commitment to democratic internal processes, stressing that every aspirant must emerge through a properly convened convention.
“We have answered this question several times. The Labour Party has consistently said that the issue of tickets will be determined at the party’s convention,” Ifoh said. “Every candidate must emerge through a democratically convened convention. There is no automatic ticket for anyone, whether presidential, governorship, or chairmanship aspirants.”
Despite ongoing tensions between Obi and the Julius Abure-led LP leadership, Ifoh noted the party remains open to reconciling with Obi and other dissatisfied stakeholders. He added that Obi alone can decide his political future, whether within the Labour Party or elsewhere.
