The Labour Party (LP) has strengthened its influence in the Abia State House of Assembly following the defection of Lewis Chinemerem Obianyi, the lawmaker representing Ukwa East constituency, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Obianyi formally announced his decision on Tuesday during plenary proceedings, submitting a letter of resignation from the PDP and declaring allegiance to the Labour Party on the floor of the House.
The development further alters the political balance within the Assembly, where the Labour Party has continued to expand its presence amid growing instability within opposition ranks.
Known for his vocal interventions and legislative activity, Obianyi is regarded as one of the more outspoken members of the House and has sponsored several bills since assuming office.
A close associate of the lawmaker, who confirmed the defection, cited the prolonged internal crises within the PDP as a key factor behind the move.
The defection comes at a time when the Labour Party is consolidating its position in Abia State, reinforcing its dominance in the legislature and reshaping the political landscape ahead of future electoral contests.
