The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has hit back at former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is plotting to remain in power beyond constitutional limits.
El-Rufai had suggested that the President was attempting to create a “life presidency,” sparking outrage within the ruling party.
In a statement on Monday, Lagos APC Publicity Secretary Mogaji Seye Oladejo described the remark as “reckless, mischievous and an insult” to Tinubu’s long record of defending democracy.
Oladejo pointed to Tinubu’s prominent role in the 1990s pro-democracy struggle, recalling how he risked exile and persecution as a member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) in the fight against military dictatorship.
He insisted it was “laughable and shameful” for El-Rufai, of all people, to question Tinubu’s democratic credentials, stressing that the President has consistently opposed tenure elongation and defended constitutional order.
The Lagos APC further noted that Nigeria’s democracy is protected by constitutional term limits, strong institutions and checks and balances that prevent any leader from holding on to power indefinitely.
The rebuttal underscores deepening tensions within the ruling APC as prominent figures exchange words over the future of Tinubu’s presidency.
