Fresh arrests have been made in the investigation into the killing of Prince Ademola Akinloye, the son of the Ajiran of Agungi, Oba Tijani Adetunji Akinloye, as the Lagos State Police Command intensifies efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the high-profile murder.
Prince Akinloye was shot dead by gunmen on August 26, 2024, along Chevron Drive near Ebeano Supermarket in the Agungi area of Lagos. The attack, which occurred in broad daylight, sparked outrage within the community and triggered a major police investigation.
Providing an update on the case, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed during a briefing with journalists at the Officers’ Mess in Ikeja that more suspects had recently been apprehended.
Although the police chief did not reveal the exact number of the newly arrested individuals, he confirmed that those in custody had made voluntary confessional statements regarding their alleged roles in the crime.
“In the course of the investigation, we have apprehended more suspects who have voluntarily confessed to the roles they played in the crime,” Jimoh said.
According to police records, nine suspects were initially arrested earlier during the investigation after intelligence reports linked them to the killing.
Police authorities also disclosed that some of the suspects have alleged links to another murder case involving Sheriff Salami, who was killed on April 18, 2023, in the Moba community in Ajah.
Investigators believe the two incidents may share criminal connections, though authorities have not yet provided detailed findings.
Meanwhile, security operatives are still searching for a key suspect identified as Ahmad Akanbi, who has been declared wanted by the police.
“We are still pursuing him and have not relented in our efforts. The command remains determined to ensure that justice is served and that all those responsible for criminal acts are brought before the law,” Jimoh added.
The Ojomu Royal Family of Ajiran has also pledged to closely follow the investigation into the killings of Prince Akinloye and Sheriff Salami.
In a public notice signed by Oba Tijani Adetunji Akinloye and Yekini Olawale Bakare, the royal family stressed that both attacks occurred in broad daylight within the Ojomu community.
The family said its involvement in the investigation aims to ensure that those responsible are held accountable while restoring a sense of safety among residents of the kingdom.
According to the statement, the quest for justice is also intended to provide closure for the grieving family following the tragic loss.
Police say investigations are ongoing as authorities work to track down remaining suspects connected to the case.
