A dramatic road crash involving multiple vehicles sparked a fire and caused massive traffic disruption along Admiralty Way in Lagos on Monday, forcing authorities to divert motorists and battle the blaze.
The incident, confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), occurred inward Admiralty Roundabout near Road 14, where three vehicles reportedly collided, with one vehicle bursting into flames.
In a statement shared on its official X platform, LASTMA said the crash led to a dangerous situation after one of the vehicles caught fire, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air and drawing the attention of motorists and residents in the area.
Video footage released by the agency showed the vehicle completely engulfed in flames as emergency responders rushed to contain the situation. Firefighters were later seen battling the inferno, eventually putting out the fire, although the affected vehicle was left severely damaged.
The accident triggered heavy traffic congestion across the busy corridor. To ease the gridlock, LASTMA officers immediately diverted vehicles through Road 14, directing drivers to reconnect with Durosimi Etti Road while emergency operations continued.
Officials of the Nigeria Police Force and additional fire service personnel were also mobilised to the scene to provide support and ensure public safety.
LASTMA said its officers remained on ground to coordinate traffic flow and assist stranded motorists, introducing a counterflow system to help vehicles reconnect to Admiralty Roundabout.
Authorities are still working to restore normal traffic movement in the area as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
