Loni, a bustling industrial town just under an hour from Delhi, has earned a grim distinction: the city with the world’s worst air quality. According to Swiss air-monitoring firm IQAir, Loni’s average PM2.5 concentration last year hit 112.5 µg/m³, 22 times the World Health Organization’s safe limit.

A hazardous cocktail of factory emissions, vehicle exhaust, and construction dust has turned everyday breathing into a health risk for the city’s 700,000 residents.

“Even breathing is difficult here, let alone coughing,” says Manoj Kumar, 45, an e-rickshaw driver who has spent his life in Loni. Resident Mohammad Mohmin Khan echoes the concern: “The pollution is relentless. I wear a mask every time I step out.”

Health Crisis Deepens

Fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, penetrates deep into the lungs and can enter the bloodstream, contributing to asthma, heart and lung disease, cancer, and cognitive impairment in children. Dr. Anil Singh, who runs a clinic in Loni, reports a surge in respiratory problems, particularly in young children developing early asthma.

Families are seeing the toll firsthand. Khushi Feroze, mother of a three-year-old, says her son frequently suffers from allergies, coughs, and stomach infections. “We have to dust our home multiple times a day because the air brings in so much dirt,” she explains.

Why Loni Suffers

Northern India routinely faces toxic winter smog, worsened by temperature inversions that trap pollutants near the ground. In April 2025, a dust storm in Delhi sent additional toxins into Loni’s already compromised air.

Despite India’s Clean Air Program, launched in 2019 to reduce particulate pollution by 40% by 2025-26, enforcement has lagged. Measures such as curbing coal-based power plants, banning biomass burning, and installing air-monitoring systems have shown limited results.

Regional Context

Three of the world’s top five most polluted cities are in India, including Delhi, the world’s most polluted capital. Pakistan also faces severe pollution, ranking as the most polluted country globally in 2025, while neighboring China has successfully reduced PM2.5 levels through multi-billion-dollar initiatives.
