Medical Panel Suspends Doctors Over Chimamanda Adichie’s Son’s Death Amid Alleged Negligence

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, alongside two other doctors, following findings of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.

The tragic death of one of the twin sons of acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege, occurred on January 7, 2026, after a brief illness.

Allegations of Negligence

Adichie revealed that her son was taken to Euracare Hospital in Lagos for an MRI scan and central line insertion following what initially appeared to be a common cold, which escalated into a severe infection.

During the procedure, Nkanu was sedated with propofol but reportedly not properly monitored, leading to seizures, loss of responsiveness, and cardiac arrest. Adichie stated, “He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th.”

Panel Findings and Suspensions

Following a thorough investigation, the panel suspended:

  • Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director, Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital
  • Dr. Titus Ogundare, Anesthesiologist, Euracare Hospital
  • Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Officer, Atlantis Pediatric Hospital

The trio will remain barred from practicing in Nigeria until the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal reaches a verdict.

Additionally, the panel found prima facie evidence of professional misconduct against ten other doctors, including Dr. Adeseye Akinsete, Dr. Chidinma Ohagwu, Dr. Anthony Ajeh, and others. Eight doctors were cleared of wrongdoing.

The investigation examined complaints against 21 doctors, reviewed counter-affidavits, and considered sworn depositions over its 25th session held on February 17–18, 2026, in Abuja.
