Lagos court sets international DNA testing to resolve paternity dispute over late singer’s child

The Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ikorodu has authorised DNA testing for Liam, the son of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, to be conducted in three laboratories abroad — one in the United States and two in the United Kingdom.

The development comes after Mohbad’s father, Oladayo Ogungbe, demanded a DNA test following questions surrounding the late singer’s death in September 2023. The court’s decision ensures that both sides have a say in selecting the testing facilities.

Laboratories Selected

According to Ogungbe’s counsel, the singer’s widow, Wunmi, and Mohbad’s father each selected a laboratory, while the court appointed an independent facility to guarantee impartiality.

“The court has eventually picked three DNA laboratory centres: two in the United Kingdom and one in the United States. One from us, one from them, and the court picked an independent one,” Ogungbe’s lawyer explained.

Next Steps

The court has scheduled the collection of DNA samples for April 7, 2026, which will be closely monitored by welfare officers to ensure proper procedures are followed. All parties involved will be present during the sampling process.

This move is seen as a critical step in legally confirming Liam’s paternity and addressing the lingering dispute following the untimely death of the popular singer.
