My Life Is Under Threat for Defending Nnamdi Kanu – Lawyer Aloy Ejimakor Cries Out

The Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Aloy Ejimakor, says he has been facing serious threats and blackmail over his continued legal defence of the Biafra agitator.

Ejimakor, who made the revelation during a podcast interview with Chief Chidi Nwanyanwu, alleged that since Kanu’s legal victory against the Nigerian government on his extraordinary rendition, his safety has been under constant threat.

Kanu was arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and forcibly returned to Nigeria in what has been widely described as an “extraordinary rendition.” Despite multiple court rulings discharging and acquitting him, the Nigerian government has continued to keep the IPOB leader in detention.

Ejimakor lamented that some individuals were using Kanu’s legal victories to secure asylum abroad while launching smear campaigns against him.

“Some of the people blackmailing me are using these victories to process successful asylum claims around the world — what greater evil can you imagine than that?” he said.

He disclosed that his dedication to Kanu’s legal defence had taken a heavy toll on him.

“Since 2021, when I took over these cases, I’ve faced countless threats to my safety. I’ve aged exponentially, but I continue to work proudly and stoically,” Ejimakor stated.

The lawyer also revealed that even within the IPOB circle, his loyalty has sometimes been questioned.

“When I filed a petition to challenge the declaration of IPOB as a terrorist group, some people said I’m not an IPOB lawyer. How can you quarrel with success? If I represent Nnamdi Kanu, I am automatically an IPOB lawyer,” he said.

Ejimakor further accused the Federal Government of exploiting internal disputes to undermine his work in court.

“Sometimes the government uses that argument to challenge my right to appear in court, but I always overcome them,” he added.
