The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a final-year student accused of abandoning her newborn baby girl in a bush in Akwanga.
Police spokesperson SP Ramhan Nansel confirmed the arrest on Thursday in Lafia, identifying the suspect as a final-year NCE student at the College of Education, Akwanga.
“The mother of the baby has been identified and arrested. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for comprehensive investigation and prosecution,” Nansel said.
The infant was discovered on Wednesday by residents near the popular A.A. Koto area of Akwanga, close to Hope Academy Primary School. Wrapped in cloth, the baby was found alive and immediately handed over to the police.
The shocking discovery has sparked outrage among residents, who condemned the inhumane act. Many described it as a disturbing reminder of the dangers of child abandonment and called for justice for the baby.
