Nenadi Usman Becomes First Female Interim National Chairman of Labour Party, Takes Over Secretariat

Nenadi Usman has officially assumed office as Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), marking a historic moment as the first female to lead a major political party in Nigeria.

The formal takeover took place at the party’s national secretariat in Utako District, Abuja, on Tuesday, following a Federal High Court ruling that affirmed the removal of Julius Abure as national chairman and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Usman-led National Caretaker Committee.

Speaking at the event, Usman expressed gratitude and optimism, describing the day as a significant milestone for both herself and the party.

“I want to particularly thank God Almighty for a day like this. This is the day that the Lord has made; we shall rejoice and be glad in it,” she said.

Usman acknowledged the long and challenging journey to this point. “What we thought was going to be smooth sailing took a long time, but with patience, today we are here. All we want is to develop this party and do the right thing at the right time,” she added.

She also praised the contributions of Abia State Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, and his team, who have been actively working since the caretaker committee’s inauguration in December 2025.

“They’ve been doing a lot of work, and we thought it would be nice to meet today in front of the press to let the whole country know what we have done so far,” Usman said.

The new national chairman concluded by reassuring supporters of her commitment to the party’s growth: “For those who have been very supportive and encouraged us, we want to let you know that we will not let you down.”

During the visit, Usman led journalists on a tour of the party’s secretariat, confirming that her team had officially taken over from the Julius Abure-led faction. The move is expected to consolidate the Usman-led LP ahead of upcoming political activities.
