Netanyahu Reverses Decision, Grants Latin Patriarch Access to Holy Sepulchre After Global Outcry

A diplomatic and religious row in Jerusalem has eased after Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, ordered that the Latin Patriarch be granted immediate access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre following widespread criticism.

The move comes after police initially blocked Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa from entering the revered Christian site on Palm Sunday, preventing him from leading Mass at the start of Holy Week.

Security Concerns Spark Controversy

Israeli authorities said the restriction was based on safety concerns, citing ongoing missile threats linked to the conflict involving Iran. Netanyahu stated that holy sites in Jerusalem had been repeatedly targeted and that the decision was made without “malicious intent.”

Fragments from a recent strike reportedly landed just metres from the church, heightening fears for public safety. Police had imposed broader restrictions across Jerusalem’s Old City, limiting access to major religious sites.

Historic Denial Draws Global Reaction

Church officials described the incident as unprecedented, saying it marked the first time in centuries that a Latin Patriarch had been denied entry to the site on Palm Sunday.

In a statement, the Patriarchate warned that the decision risked undermining religious freedoms and the sensitivities of millions of Christians observing Holy Week worldwide.

The move triggered swift international criticism. Emmanuel Macron called for the protection of religious rights in Jerusalem, while Giorgia Meloni described the restriction as an affront to believers.

The United States also weighed in, with Ambassador Mike Huckabee questioning the justification for the decision, though later welcoming its reversal.

Access Restored After Intervention

Following intervention by Isaac Herzog, Israeli authorities reached an agreement with church leaders, allowing Cardinal Pizzaballa full access to conduct services.

Police confirmed a “mutual framework” had been established to enable Easter celebrations under heightened security, including a scaled-down version of the traditional Holy Fire ceremony.

In a statement, Cardinal Pizzaballa’s office said the issue had been resolved and expressed gratitude for the intervention, while stressing the importance of ensuring access to places of worship for all faiths.

Faith and Conflict Collide

The episode highlights the tension between security measures and religious freedoms in Jerusalem, a city sacred to Christians, Muslims, and Jews alike.

As conflict continues in the region, the challenge remains balancing protection of life with the preservation of centuries-old religious traditions.
