Nigeria Backs China’s Global Governance Initiative, Aligns with Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ Agenda

Nigeria has formally endorsed China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI), a multilateral framework launched by President Xi Jinping to promote fairness, inclusivity, and shared progress in the global order.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Tuesday by Joseph Tegbe, Director-General of the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), on behalf of President Bola Tinubu and the federal government.

Tegbe said the initiative reflects Nigeria’s long-standing push for equity in global institutions and resonates strongly with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises economic revitalisation, social inclusion, and international cooperation.

“The Global Governance Initiative is more than a vision, it is a call to action. Nigeria stands ready to work with China and other partners to translate this initiative into tangible progress for our citizens, for Africa, and for the world,” Tegbe stated.

A Platform for Growth and Diplomacy

Nigeria stressed that the GGI’s pillars of sovereign equality, international rule of law, and multilateralism align with its foreign policy priorities. Tegbe also highlighted Abuja’s continued demand for Africa’s permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council, as well as Nigeria’s contributions to peacekeeping and mediation across West Africa.

On the economic front, Tegbe argued that the GGI offers a practical channel to accelerate national development goals, especially in infrastructure, energy, industrial corridors, and the digital economy. He pointed to Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, which targets broadband expansion, fintech innovation, and youth empowerment, as areas where partnership under the GGI could yield concrete results.

By backing the initiative, Nigeria positions itself as a leading African voice in shaping a more inclusive global governance system—while also opening doors to deeper cooperation with China on development and security.
