“Nigeria Is Destroyed, APC Is Hijacking Elections” — Amaechi Quits Party, Slams Tinubu’s Leadership

Rotimi Amaechi has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that Nigeria is at its breaking point and accusing both the ruling party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of plotting to rig the upcoming general elections. The former Minister of Transportation and two-term governor of Rivers State made this declaration on Tuesday night, July 1, 2025, during a coalition meeting in Abuja.

Amaechi said his decision to dump the APC was long overdue, adding that he had previously warned the party’s leadership not to invite him to any more meetings. “I left APC last night. I never attended one meeting. Last time they invited me, I warned them in writing. I said, ‘Don’t even invite me again.’ I’m surprised they didn’t expel me,” he told reporters.

According to him, the country’s economy has completely collapsed under the Tinubu-led administration, with hunger, inflation, and joblessness reaching unbearable levels. “Nigeria is completely destroyed. People can’t buy food. There’s no money. Inflation is at its peak. And the federal government is busy trying to hijack the election. INEC is helping them,” he said bitterly.

Amaechi didn’t mince words about President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, declaring that he never believed Tinubu had what it takes to govern a country like Nigeria. “I’ve never believed Tinubu is a material to govern Nigeria. Things were better under Buhari. People are even now begging for Buhari to come back. That’s how bad it is,” he said.

Highlighting the economic collapse, he noted that the naira has depreciated beyond imagination. “During Buhari’s time, the dollar was around ₦460. Now it’s over ₦1,580. That’s more than a 100% increase. What kind of leadership is that?” he asked. Amaechi maintained that this government’s policies—whether deliberate or not—have failed to reflect any concern for ordinary Nigerians.

The former minister accused the APC of being filled with corrupt individuals, saying the party had lost all sense of moral compass. “You can’t be in a club where the majority are stealing and keep quiet. I couldn’t continue pretending,” he said, stating that his departure marks the beginning of a true movement to reclaim Nigeria for the people, not just another change of party.

Calling for a national awakening, Amaechi emphasized that Nigeria doesn’t need another party switch but a people-driven revolution. “What must happen is a movement—one where Nigerians rise and take back their government. Not us, not politicians, but the people themselves,” he added, hinting at support for the emerging opposition coalition now rallying around the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform.
