‘Nigeria Is Getting Worse’: Olumide Oworu Opens Up on Why He Joined Politics

Nollywood actor Olumide Oworu has revealed that frustration over Nigeria’s direction and a desire to shape national policies pushed him into partisan politics.

Speaking during a recent interview on Naija FM Lagos, the 31-year-old said his decision was driven by concerns about governance and the long-term future of the country.

Oworu explained that public policies directly affect his life and that of other young Nigerians, making it necessary for him to step beyond the screen and into the political arena.

“I decided to join politics because of how the country is going. I know how Nigeria was when I was younger, but now, things keep getting worse. And I want to start a family and raise my kids here,” he said.

‘Policies Will Affect Me Too’

The actor stressed that laws and policies enacted today will ultimately shape the lives of his generation tomorrow.

“So, I have to make sure that I try my best to be among the policymakers because whatever policy that is being enacted, it would ultimately affect me like every other common person,” Oworu added.

He also pointed to what he described as the ageing nature of Nigeria’s political class, arguing that younger voices must step forward to influence governance.

“Most of the present crops of politicians are aging out and whatever policy they are making today, it is me and my friends who will be at the receiving end tomorrow,” he explained.

From Nollywood to the Ballot

Oworu previously tested his political ambition during the 2023 general elections, contesting for the Lagos State House of Assembly seat in Surulere Constituency 1 under the Labour Party platform.

He lost the race to fellow actor and incumbent lawmaker Desmond Elliott.

Despite the electoral setback, Oworu has maintained his interest in politics, positioning himself among a growing number of young Nigerian entertainers seeking active roles in governance.

His comments have reignited conversations about youth participation in politics and whether a new generation of leaders can reshape the country’s future.
