Independent artists drive growth while Nigerian music continues to captivate worldwide audiences.

Nigerian artists generated more than ₦60 billion from Spotify in 2025, according to the platform’s annual report released on Monday. This marks a 140% growth in revenue over the past two years, highlighting the rising influence of Nigerian music in the global streaming market.

Independent artists lead the charge

The report revealed that 58% of all royalties earned by Nigerian artists on Spotify were credited to independent artists or labels, showcasing the resilience and business acumen of non-mainstream talent.

In total, Nigerian musicians amassed 30.3 billion streams and 1.6 billion listening hours in 2025. The report also highlighted a 55% increase in streams by Nigerian female artists, underscoring the growing recognition and global reach of women in the local music scene.

Global playlists boost exposure

Spotify data showed Nigerian music featured in nearly 320 million user playlists worldwide and over 12 million playlists within Nigeria. Across the platform, more than 60 million playlists included Nigerian artists in 2025, reflecting both domestic popularity and international demand.

Music analysts suggest that the strong performance is driven by a combination of viral hits, strategic collaborations, and the international appetite for Afrobeats and Nigerian pop culture.

“Nigerian music continues to attract global audiences, proving that our artists are not just local icons but global brands,” the report noted.

Nigerian music on the rise

The figures confirm Nigeria’s position as a leading hub for music innovation in Africa. Experts say that continued investment in digital distribution and content creation could further boost revenue for artists and labels, while expanding opportunities for emerging talents.
