A Nigerian-born legal luminary, Mrs Margaret Obi, has been appointed as a High Court Judge in England and Wales, marking a historic milestone as the first African-born person to attain the prestigious position.

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, announced the appointment while congratulating Mrs Obi for what he described as “a testament to excellence beyond borders.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) titled “Celebrating Excellence Beyond Borders,” Obi praised her rise in the legal profession, highlighting her 27 years of legal practice and seven years of judicial service, which he said reflect “hard work, integrity, and professional excellence.”

“Her elevation is historic and inspirational,” Peter Obi said. “It reminds us of the extraordinary potential of Nigerians to excel when given the right environment.”

The former governor also clarified that Mrs Margaret Obi is not his wife, noting that his spouse identifies as Mrs Margaret Peter-Obi.

Peter Obi described the new judge’s success as a reflection of the talent and resilience Nigerians bring to global institutions, urging the nation to build a system that rewards excellence within its own borders.

“Her story should inspire us to create an environment that nurtures talent here at home,” he added.

Mrs Margaret Obi’s appointment has been widely celebrated within the Nigerian and British legal communities, with many describing her rise as a victory for diversity and representation in the UK judiciary.
