Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, has reportedly been flown to the United Kingdom for medical treatment, despite earlier assurances from the presidency that he was receiving care in Nigeria.
Multiple sources familiar with the development confirmed to The West Post that Edun left the country earlier this week to undergo treatment abroad.
This comes just days after presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga dismissed reports that the minister had been flown overseas, insisting that Edun was only “indisposed” and receiving treatment locally.
The presidency’s earlier statement also revealed that Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso was chosen to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the ongoing World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings in Washington, D.C., in Edun’s absence.
While details of Edun’s ailment remain undisclosed, his trip to the UK has reignited public concern over the frequent medical travels of top Nigerian government officials — a recurring issue that often sparks debates about the state of the country’s healthcare system.
