The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has confirmed plans to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, signaling a major reshaping of Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
NNPP National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson disclosed during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief that despite the defection of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP will continue to field candidates at various levels of the 2027 elections.
Johnson emphasized that while the party will support the ADC at the presidential level and potentially in select national contests, it will maintain its independent presence in other races across the country.
“Kwankwaso resigned from the NNPP and will join the ADC today in Kano State,” Johnson said, stressing that the decision followed weeks of consultations with opposition leaders and stakeholders, including the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Kwankwaso’s exit is seen as a strategic political realignment aimed at consolidating opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Johnson dismissed claims that the defection undermines the NNPP, stating that the move reflects a coordinated effort to strengthen a coalition capable of presenting Nigerians with a robust alternative in 2027.
Recent meetings included high-profile political figures such as ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and Bayelsa West Senator Seriake Dickson. These consultations were intended to forge a broad opposition platform while consolidating internal support for Kwankwaso’s transition.
Johnson concluded that the alliance is designed to serve both the opposition’s strategic goals and the interests of Nigerians ahead of the next general elections.
