Nollywood Legend Tom Njemanze Battles Prostate Cancer, Appeals to Fans for Surgery Funds

Veteran actor Tom Njemanze, famed for roles in Issakaba, Tokunboh, Brain Box, and Osuofia in London, has revealed a prostate cancer diagnosis and urgently needs surgery. His plea, delivered via Instagram by filmmaker Stanley Ontop on June 30, 2025, called on Nigerians to help “our legend live again”.

Hospital photos show Njemanze receiving oxygen and IV treatment. The iconic actor, born December 9, 1939, is among Nollywood’s founding figures. Ontop emphasized that “nothing is too small,” urging fans to contribute toward the artery-clearing operation.

Njemanze’s diagnosis comes amid an industry-wide concern: prostate cancer is Nigeria’s most common male cancer, with detection and treatment costs reaching ₦1.5m–₦3.5m ($3.7k–$8.6k), often paid out-of-pocket. His age places him at higher risk, as most Nigerian prostate cases present late, around age 68.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has stepped in, tapping its intervention fund to assist Njemanze and other ailing veterans. Still, the guild acknowledges that its resources are stretched and public donations remain essential.

Veteran colleagues, including John Amaefule, who recently sought help for a stroke and cancer, echo Njemanze’s struggle. Many Nigerian actors face limited welfare support, spurring calls for stronger industry healthcare structures.

Public health experts highlight the need for early prostate cancer screening—a PSA test and digital rectal exam—for men over 50, especially Black men with higher incidence rates. The Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation, led by Urologist Dr. Adebowale Oyebade, promotes free screenings and awareness campaigns.

As Njemanze fights for his life, the appeal underscores a broader crisis: Nigeria’s aging Nollywood heroes need systemic health support. Their plight spotlights gaps in national cancer care—will this moment spark lasting reform?
