Obosima Community Demands New Leadership Amid Governance Concerns

Obosima Autonomous Community has called for urgent leadership reforms following concerns over inactivity and governance lapses in recent years. The town hall meeting, which drew residents from both the local area and the diaspora, focused on fostering unity, accountability, and sustainable development.

The gathering was convened by Dr. Kingsley Chinedu Eluma, who explained that the meeting arose from discussions on the community platform “Sons and Daughters of Obosima Home and Abroad”, a group dedicated to promoting constructive dialogue and decision-making for the community’s growth.

Dr. Eluma stressed that progress depends on collective ownership of community affairs. “We are here because we all desire peace and development for Obosima. Positive change starts with unity and the commitment of every son and daughter,” he said.

A major concern raised at the meeting was the performance of the previous administration, which reportedly left the community largely inactive for five years due to leadership instability and procedural irregularities. The Governor of Imo State, Sen. Hope Uzodinma, subsequently directed the dissolution of all Town Union executives, including Women and Youth Leaders.

Investigations revealed that previous officers were appointed rather than elected and had remained loyal to Hon. Prince Marcel Amadioha, the chairman who appointed them. As a result, plans for immediate elections were halted, and Dr. Eluma was appointed by concerned community members to restore stability.

The Imo State Ministry of Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs, led by Hon. Ruby Emele, approved a harmonization of the community’s constitution and recommended forming a six-member committee to ensure that only eligible individuals contest leadership positions. The committee will work alongside Dr. Eluma to produce a functional governance framework.

Participants also raised concerns over multiple platforms within the community that had fueled divisions. A consensus was reached to consolidate into a neutral forum for collective decision-making.

While some defended the previous leadership, including Youth President Hon. Nwanedi Dalymor Chibuike, who cited the construction of seven lock-up shops, the meeting emphasized adherence to due process and cooperation as essential for future progress.

The town hall concluded with a unified call for commitment, peace, and sustainable development as Obosima seeks to reposition itself as a model of good governance in Imo State.
