Authorities in Ogoja, Cross River State are investigating a gruesome case after a man reportedly murdered his girlfriend over alleged infidelity and concealed her body in a bush.
The victim, identified as Moshe, hailed from Ibil community, while the suspect, named Nwang, is from Ekpugrinya, approximately eight kilometres away. The couple had been cohabiting without formal engagement or payment of bride price, according to Moshe’s family.
“The man brutally killed my cousin in the farm even though he had not paid the bride price or observed customary rites,” said Joy Philip, a cousin, tearfully. “Moshe, may your spirit find peace while your killer faces justice.”
The suspect is currently in police custody. However, a large group of women besieged the Ogoja Divisional Police Station, demanding that Nwang be released into their custody to face vigilante justice.
“Cruelty like this exists because the system has failed us. The man snuffed the life out of another human being and does not deserve to live. We are ready to deliver justice ourselves,” said Uduma, a protester.
A source at the station confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer was unavailable for comment but stated the police would not comply with the vigilante demands, emphasizing that the law must take its course.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Ogoja, highlighting the challenges of domestic violence, insecurity, and vigilantism in rural communities. Authorities are urging residents to remain calm and allow the legal system to prosecute the suspect appropriately.
