A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, has declared his intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election in 2027—marking his fourth bid for the position.
Isiaka, who represents the Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, made the disclosure during a media interaction with journalists in Abeokuta on Sunday.
Popularly known as GNI, the lawmaker has previously contested the governorship in 2011, 2015, and 2019, but was unsuccessful in all three attempts.
In 2011, he ran under the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN), securing 137,051 votes, but lost to Senator Ibikunle Amosun of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), who won the election. He made another attempt in 2015 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but again lost to Amosun, who secured a second term in office.
Isiaka’s third attempt came in 2019 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he was defeated by the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, who remains in office.
Following that election, Isiaka defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and went on to win a seat in the House of Representatives in 2023, where he currently chairs the Committee on National Planning and Economic Development.
Speaking on his latest ambition, Isiaka said he had begun consultations with stakeholders and would formally declare his candidacy at the appropriate time.
“I’m expressing interest to run for the governorship of the state in 2027… I have been meeting stakeholders over the past few weeks to inform them of my intention,” he said.
He described himself as a qualified candidate with deep knowledge of the state, insisting that his aspirations are rooted in his commitment to Ogun’s development rather than political pressure or external influence.
Isiaka said his vision for Ogun State includes expanding industrialisation, improving access to quality healthcare and education, and creating employment opportunities for residents.
He also dismissed speculation suggesting that his governorship ambition is being backed by Governor Dapo Abiodun, stating that his decision is entirely personal and based on his readiness to lead.
