Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced the formation of a committee to organise a state burial for former First Lady Chief Mrs. Lucia Onabanjo.
The committee will be led by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi. Other members include the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Dare Alebiosu, and the State Commissioner for Finance, Dapo Okubadejo.
Governor Abiodun made the announcement during a condolence visit to the Onabanjo family in Ijebu-Ode, following the passing of the former First Lady.
Describing her as an exemplary and selfless public servant, the governor said Mrs. Onabanjo used her position to serve both God and humanity. He added that the state government would ensure she receives a dignified and befitting burial.
“Mama lived for 100 years and would have been 101 this year,” the governor said. “She lived a ripe and fulfilled life, leaving behind legacies of impact that call for the celebration of a well-lived, purposeful and meaningful existence.”
Mrs. Onabanjo was married to former governor Chief Bisi Onabanjo, a respected journalist and statesman known for establishing landmark institutions such as Ogun State Television and the Olabisi Onabanjo University.
Governor Abiodun also praised her personal contributions, noting that she was a trained teacher, devoted homemaker, supportive wife, and a loving mother.
“Though we mourn the departure of a great woman, a titan, a former First Lady, and an industrious daughter of Ijebu land and Ogun State, we should be grateful that she lived a life worthy of emulation,” the governor added.
The state government’s decision to organise a state burial reflects Mrs. Onabanjo’s long-standing influence and the impact of her public service.
