A Local Government Inspector (LGI) with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has been arraigned before a magistrate court over the death of a corps member, Victoria Ariyo.
The accused, Abass Olalekan, was brought before the Isabo Magistrate Court on Monday following his arrest in connection with the incident.
Ariyo, who served under the Abeokuta South Local Government Area where Olalekan worked as LGI, reportedly died from complications linked to pregnancy.
Sources allege that the LGI had a romantic relationship with the deceased, which allegedly resulted in pregnancy and a subsequent termination that led to her death.
Olalekan, 43, was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and attempting to procure an abortion. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to the charge sheet (MA/22/99/2026), the defendant allegedly conspired with others between January and March 2026 in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta, to commit the offence of abortion, contrary to Section 516 of the Criminal Code of Ogun State.
He was also accused of unlawfully attempting to procure an abortion by allegedly supplying drugs to Victoria Ariyo, an offence punishable under Section 230 of the Criminal Code.
The defence counsel, Elizabeth Adelabu, applied for bail on behalf of the accused, arguing that the charges were bailable.
Presiding Magistrate A.K. Araba granted bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum. The court stipulated that one surety must be a blood relative, while the other must be gainfully employed.
Additional bail conditions include the submission of a utility bill, an affidavit of means, six passport photographs, and proof of tax payment to the Ogun State Government for 2026.
The magistrate ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending fulfilment of the bail conditions.
The case has been adjourned until April 14 for further hearing.
